John Cure nominates a distinctive Swimming pool and leisure complex, dominated by a unique pyramid roof. The pool was designed with sloping sides to resemble a beach and incorporating a wave machine. The Centre also had a gymnasium, squash courts and large halls suitable for conferencing, weddings etc.
No longer financially viable, the Centre was demolished for an ASDA store and residential tower.

I remember going here when I was a tiny child! It had a wave machine in the pool which we all thought was some kind of glimpse of the future.
The pool could probably best be described as a tiled beach. I was quite happy splashing around in the shallow part, and messing around in the surf when I was small, but it was a mark of honour when you got older and tougher (Eight or nine years old) to go all the way to the deep end and hang onto the bar when the wave machine was going.
I used to imagine that space ships would be like it, someday. Now it’s been replaced by an ASDA/Barrat gulag complex. Rubbish.
I remember going here when I was young. I was thrilled to have such a fantastic building near my home. The sad thing was you could not swim in the pool due to the designe as it was to shallow and for fun use only. The pyramid rood ended up with parts missing and the pool water ended up being always cold and with the roof missing was also cold out the water.
If you have a better photo of this building, please send it in!
What an ugly building. Looks like a juice squeezer. I bet the architects consulted with the people who were actually going to use this building before they put it up though, I’m quite sure.
I bet the Asda box isn’t much better though. So it goes…
Built 1980? Severely outdated by 1974 latest. Mind you, its Romford – third-rate Brutalism actually improves the place no end.
